Ultrasonic humidifiers use high-frequency vibrations to generate a micro-fine mist, which quickly evaporates into the air. The require less energy than hot steam humidifiers since they do not have to bring water up to near-boiling temperatures. Some of the models below are capable of pre-heating the water and product a warm mist (approximately 104 °F) which better maintains your room's temperature. A refillable demineralization cartridge prevents "white dust" residue from calcium, lime and other minerals found in tap water. The AIR-O-SWISS quad-band microbial protection system prevents microbial growth in the water base.
An evaporative humidifier draws dry indoor air in and passes is over an evaporator wick which is saturated with water. Ideally humidified air exits the unit. The since water is wicked up by thirsty air, the evaporator provides the same level of available humidification regardless of the water level in the unit. Evaporative humidification is self-regulating; indoor air only holds as much moisture as it needs, so there is no worry of over-humidification. Besides a nearly silent fan, there are no moving parts or pressurized water tanks that "bubble" as they refill a base tray.
